HDM cuts water as drought hits Kokstad

2016-02-05 06:00

MUNICIPALITY water is being turned off in the morning and at night in Kokstad every day.

This is because of the dire water shortages in Harry Gwala District.

A statement regarding the situation states: “Harry Gwala District Municipality hereby notifies the community of Kokstad Town, Extension 7, Bhongweni and Shayamoya areas about the water supply shortages that had led to the closing of water at scheduled times starting from 2 February until further notice.

“In December 2014, a drought emergency was declared in Kwa-Zulu-Natal and since then teams have had to monitor all water resources within the district very closely.

“Kokstad systems managed to carry the town through the winter, but now there is insufficient rain which has led to the sources remaining strained.

“The Crystal Springs Dam and the Mzintlava River, the main sources of water, are running dry (less than 10%) at abstraction points due to the drought.

Harry Gwala District Municipality, as the water services authority, is required to start water restrictions in Kokstad.

“Due to Crystal Springs Dam level dropping severely our restriction times has been amended.
“This is the standard time across Kokstad, compared to the first phase of water restrictions.
