COLD and wet weather interrupted the annual Harry Gwala Summer Cup in eDazini, Kilimoni on Saturday.

The weather however, did not dampen the jovial mood of the hundreds of spectators.

KZN Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation MEC Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha and Ingwe Local Municipality Mayor, Nomagugu Luzulane who were at even,t were forced to postpone some races because of heavy rain and a thunderstorm during the competition. Luzulane said the race is a historical event in the area. “Horse racing in the area of eDazini in Kilimoni started a long time ago, before some of us were born. It became an official government event seven years ago, when sport and recreation decided to support the event,” she said.

“The Summer Cup has grown in leaps and bounds and has become one of the important events on the Harry Gwala sporting calendar, attracting hundreds of racing enthusiasts from all over the province.”

Sibhidla-Saphetha said her department took the initiative in 2005 of promoting rural horse racing in the province. “What makes this race unique from other horse-racing events is that horses and jockeys are drawn from rural communities.”

She said rural horse racing is a phenomenon that has grown in the province.

“This event offers young and promising jockeys from rural areas the opportunity to showcase their talent at district level and ultimately to a provincial platform in the Dundee July.

“There has been a substantial increase in the stakes compared to previous years, courtesy of increased financial backing from sponsors,” she added.

Farmgate CEO, a Creighton milk company, Kyle Antel said they are happy to be part of a community event such as the Summer Cup. Farmgate sponsored 1800 one-litre cartons of milk to spectators at the event.

“Ingwe Local Municipality has helped us a lot. We have worked together well with them so we decided it would be good to contribute something to an event under the municipality,” Antel said.

The Kilimon infrastructure has also undergone an upgrade, with a new permanent racetrack, permanent ablution facilities and water supply, thanks to the Sibhidla-Saphetha's department.

The main race was won by Sigwebosentambo, ridden by Plaza from Uthukela District Municipality. In second place was Indidane ridden by Gwadla from Amajuba District Municipality and in third place was Ndukuziyanginetha whose rider, Sithembiso Gamede, is from Zululand.
