NURSES and staff at EG and Usher Memorial Hospital in Kokstad celebrated International Nurses Day by honouring the founder of the nursing profession, Florence Nightingale and the first African professional nurse, Cecilia Makhiwane last Thursday.

International Nurses Day was celebrated across the globe on 12 May under a theme “A Force for Change: Improving Health System Resilience”.

Nurse Nombulelo Ntombela (56) said nursing is a calling not a vocation.
“Nightingale established this profession many years ago after seeing many people being killed without help. She used to organise unemployed women to help the sick, such was her passion. Our duty as nurses is to follow in her footsteps.”

During the celebration nurses held candles and read the Nurses’ Pledge of Service.
The hospital’s employee assistant practitioner, Sithembile Pitoyi, advised nurses not to get caught by investment companies in Kokstad, who take their investment and promise to double their money, then disappear.
The hospital also held a farewell party for eight nurses who were retiring. Pitoyi said also warned retired nurses about spending their money wisely. She used the term amabhanoyi (flights) when describing investment companies.
“The hospital is honoured to do farewells for retired nurses because some nurses die before retirement.”
