BIDVEST Wits will appoint Gordon Igesund as coach with Gavin Hunt replacing Bafana Bafana mentor Shakes Mashaba, according to widespread reports.

Hunt has been linked with the Bafana Bafana job following Mashaba’s underwhelming performance as head coach. South Africa are on the brink of not qualifying for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, there is still a lifeline for Mashaba with the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers still to be attended to. Bafana Bafana qualified for Round 3 of the World Cup qualification phase after their victory over Angola last November.

Round 3 is set to take place between October and November 2017.

Laduma reported that if Safa do decide to lure Hunt in for the Bafana Bafana job, then Igesund is leading the race to take over from the three-time Absa Premiership winning coach.

Igesund has been jobless since being axed from his post at SuperSport United in January, which saw former Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter return to South Africa.

Meanwhile, Mashaba will lead his charges this weekend (Saturday, 4 June) in their penultimate Afcon Group M qualifier against Gambia.

The tournament is set to be staged from June 11 to 25. - Sport24.
