ITHALA Development Finance Corporation has kicked off their annual SMME development roadshow better known as “My Business Indaba”.

The business development workshops will be rolled out over two days with weekly sessions offering advice and opportunities for youth and women in communities in Harry Gwala and throughout KZN.

Ithala said this year’s rendition of the province wide roadshow incorporates their three flagship programmes namely the Inkunz’isematholeni Youth in Business Competition, Siyasebenza SMME workshops and Imbokodo Iyazenzela Women in Business.

Ithala Group Chief Executive Yvonne Zwane said these programs would impact job creation and advance economic transformation. “As pioneers of banking the unbanked, we have an obligation to enrich the quality of life of historically-marginalised communities. We understand the plight of these communities and are committed to making a developmental impact where it matters most,” said Zwane.

Zwane said the organisation’s main aim was to deliver development and empowerment solutions and encourage participation in all sectors of the economy by transferring skills, training and empowering previously disadvantaged communities.

“In the past three years, Ithala has funded 684 businesses.

“The organisation disbursed R875 million, creating 7 917 jobs. Women-owned enterprises comprise 28 per cent of Ithala’s loan book while youth businesses make up 39 per cent,” said Zwane.

“Ithala’s catalytic role in nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit of SMME’s and co-operatives and promoting enterprise development was well known long before other institutions even coined the phrase,” she said.
