Kokstad man sentenced to 15 years

2015-12-04 06:00

THE Kokstad Regional Court sentenced Sihle “Skippy” Nyembezi (30) to 15 years’ imprisonment last Thursday for robbery with aggravating circumstances and five years for housebreaking with intent to rob.

In the early hours of 10 July in Bhongweni, Nyembezi (known to the complainant) entered the house of the complainant by breaking the door open with a knife.

He threatened her with a knife and took her cellphone.

A struggle between the two ensued and the complainant managed to take the knife from him, but she had already been stabbed in the forehead and on her hands. The accused then ran away and the complainant went to the police station and police accompanied her to the accused’s residence where her cellphone was recovered.

He pleaded not guilty, but after all evidence was led he was found guilty as charged.

When arguing for sentence the state said that since he has previous convictions of theft he has a complete disregard for people’s property, and that housebreaking, when a person is in the house is so serious it constitutes invasion of privacy and leads to commission of other offences like robbery, murder and rape.

The state argued that he must be removed from society to make sure that people are safe in their home.

The case was investigated by Constable Khaliphile Mbenyane of Kokstad Detectives.
