Local contractors demand project work

2017-06-23 06:00

LOCAL contractors under the Bulwer Business Forum are demanding work on the construction of a special school in Bulwer as they claim the main contractor, Stefanutti Stocks, is excluding them.

A war of words erupted between senior managers of the company and members of the forum in a meeting that was held in Bulwer last Wednesday, and as a result the matter was unresolved.
The construction of the school started last year and will be finished in 2019.

Vusi Ngcobo, a forum member, said local contractors are supposed to make up 30% of the work force on a construction project.
He said Stefanutti hired 14 sub-contractors for the project, however, only four local contractors were hired.

“According to government policies, local contractors have to make up 30% in projects.
“At the beginning of the project we agreed that local contractors would be given first priority, but instead we saw contractors from Mpumalanga and Gauteng being hired,” said Ngcobo.
He said the forum was formed by local business and contractor owners after they were excluded from many projects at Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality.
After several meetings with municipality management an agreement was reached to give local businesses and contractors priority.
A Stefanutti Stocks staffers refused to talk to the media to give their side of the situation.
