MATATIELE Local Municipality chief financial officer, Lihle Ndzelu, was one of thousands who completed the 21km distance at the Mandela Day Marathon last Sunday. He did it in a time of 3:7.

The start was at Manayi Hall in Edendale and finished at the Mandela Capture Site in Howick.

The marathon had three distance options 42km, 21km and 10km.

Ndzelu started running after he started picking up weight.
“I started running two kilometres around Kokstad and built up from there, now I want to run big marathons like the Comrades.”

Last year he ran the 10km Mandela Marathon, the 10km Harry Gwala Marathon and 10km Umzimvubu Marathon with Umzimvubu Local Municipality managers Thobela Nota and Sanelisiwe Funani.

“I am running so I am fit and can live a healthy life. Before I started running I weighed 118 kilograms, now I weigh 98 kilograms.”

Ndzelu believes running reduces the chance of getting sick and encourages others to take up running.
