Matat viewpoint

2017-03-17 06:02

WARM greetings to all readers of this column.

It is my pleasure to once again welcome you to the Matatiele Local Municipality viewpoint. This is part of our strategy to ensure you are informed about our recent accomplishments at your respective areas.

We continue to encourage you to participate actively in this democratic processes.

‘The Year of OR Tambo’

We are once again in this very important month - Human Rights Month. March 21 is an important day in the history of South Africa. It is a day that gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect on the state of human rights in the country.

Unfortunately, despite our collective efforts to curb human rights-associated ills, our people are still subjected to human rights violations. March 21 takes us back to 1960, when the selfless heroes and heroines of our country sacrificed their lives in pursuit of self-respect.

This month, with our partners, the municipality will co-ordinate programmes that seek to take the mission of 1960 forward. We encourage you to seize this opportunity and practice human dignity. This year’s Human Rights Day will be commemorated under the theme “The Year of OR Tambo: Unity in Action in Advancing Human Rights”. The aim is to build on the foundation laid by OR Tambo, raise awareness and promote respect for basic human rights.

Communicators forum engagement

On March 8 we saw the coming together of stakeholders with the aim of taking Matatiele Local Municipality communication channels forward. In 2010 a local communicators forum was established and sits quarterly.

The forum is made up of Matatiele Local Municipality communications, Special Programmes Unit, communications officials from Alfred Nzo District Municipality, a representative from Office of the Premier, representative from GCIS, government departments, NGOs, CBOs, community development workers and ward support assistants.

The forum mainly deals with service delivery related issues and promotes working relations with government departments and stakeholders.

In this session a programme of action for the upcoming quarter was developed to avoid duplications and clashes of programmes.

A word of gratitude is extended to stakeholders who continue to attend this forum in moving Matatiele forward.
