Matat Viewpoint

DEAR reader, welcome once again to our weekly update column. We have now wrapped up the third quarter of our financial year. As the Matatiele Local Municipality, we have continued to record tangible success in our quest to make the lives of the people of sweet Matat, sweet.

Freedom Month

South Africa celebrates Freedom Month this month when we will resonate with South Africans as being the month that saw the first democratic elections in 1994, giving birth to freedom and constitutional democracy in our country. The 1994 election marked a turning point that saw the previously disadvantaged become part of the South African political processes - thus the proclamation, “SA belongs to all who live in it”.

The 1994 breakthrough promotes the values of freedom and democracy, an integral part of our constitutional democracy. Freedom Day is celebrated on April 27 to commemorate the historic participation of all the people of South African in the first free and fair democratic elections.

On April 27, South Africans are called to celebrate the fruit of our democracy, and a time to reflect on the progress we have made as a country in moving South Africa forward.

Minister of Communications to visit Matatiele

In the spirit of Freedom Month, the South African government will embark on the National Imbizo Focus Week, under the theme “Together we move South Africa forward”.

Imbizo is a two-way dialogue and interactive information- sharing platform between government and people, the aim of which is to instil confidence in a robust and participatory democracy.

For this reason, the newly appointed Minister of Communications, Ayada Dlodlo and the mayor of Matatiele Local Municipality, Cllr Momelezi Mbedla will lead a delegation that will embark on an imbizo programme in Ward 21. Taking place on April 11, the purpose of the programme is to afford political principals an opportunity to communicate government-led efforts that stimulate and grow the South African economy. This will also be an opportunity to discuss and analyse the details of a nine-point plan and intended outcome.

IDP-Budget outreach road shows

The Matatiele Local Municipality invites the community within the municipal area in terms of Section 29 (i) and (ii) of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, (Act 32 of 2000), to attend the 2017/2022 IDP-Budget community outreach. This will take place from April 10 to 14. The public is advised to contact their ward councillors, ward support assistants and community development workers in getting details pertaining to their respective ward. Remember this process will not be a success without your presence.
