SEASON’S greetings to all and winding down 2016 on a high note.

Municipality wins five awards

The Matatiele Local Municipality walked away with five awards for its outstanding performance in communicating government programmes, Best Ward in Implementing Operation Masiphathisane concept and Best Community Development Worker in the Matatiele LM at the third Alfred Nzo Communicators and Media Awards held on Friday 18 November at Wild Coast Sun.

The communication unit clinched the Best Municipality in Implementing Local Government Communications System, Miss Khoboso Lebenya won the Communicator of the Year and the Innovative Communicator of the Year at the Government Communicators Awards on Friday.

Speaking to Government News the Mayor of Matatiele Local Municipality Cllr Momelezi Mbedla said hard work, focus and staff commitment was the reason behind them being recognised by their peers.

He said at the beginning of the 2015/16 financial year they developed a comprehensive communication strategy, which guided them through the year. The unit not only maintained the high standard, but ensured they strengthen their communication strategy.

“We are pleased to receive these prestigious awards, especially the best local municipality in implementing communication action plan. We see them not only as a reward for excellence in government communication, but also as encouragement to aspire to even greater heights,” said Cllr Mbedla.

Organised by the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, the awards aim to promote, encourage excellence and maintain high standards and professionalism of communication at all levels of government.

Other winners included Ward 14 as the Best Ward in Implementing Operation Masiphathisane. The award was bestowed to a ward that is effectively and innovatively implementing the Masiphathisane War Room concept that was introduced to bridge the gap between government and communities.

Paralympian gold medallist Zanele Situ from Ward 12 Nkau village was honoured for being the first black woman to win gold at the Paralympics and IPC Athletics World Championships.

Deputy Minister of Communications Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams said the awards must reinforce the commitment of communicators to excel in their daily work.

She said the awards must be a catalyst which ensures that government communicators perfectly and constantly do their work and maintain the standards.

“You play a significance role in communicating our programmes. Communicators play a central role in ensuring that citizens are participants in this democratic process and strengthen your role to make sure we communicate our programmes better,” Ndabeni said.
