KWAZULU-Natal Provincial ANC Deputy Secretary Mluleki Ndobe cautioned ANC members that 2017 is not going to be easy for them as preparations get under way for the ANC national conference scheduled to be held in December.

Speaking at a Harry Gwala cadre forum at Peace Initiative Hall in Ixopo on Sunday, Ndobe, also the mayor of Harry Gwala District Municipality, said 2017 is going to be a year of events.

“It might be a turning point for good or worse depending on how we manage issues of leadership.”

He said Harry Gwala region has been known as a region of unity over the years, but now ANC members need to examine how they manage differences.

He said this in reference to the alleged division and factionalism gripping the region as it moves towards the regional conference expected to be held in the first week of June.

This has resulted in some regional executive members hiring armed security guards as they fear for their lives. Ndobe encouraged ANC members to manage regional conferences well even though members always have leadership preferences.
The situation was tense at this regional forum and some delegates of the ANC were heard shouting after Ndobe had delivered his speech and journalist were asked to leave the hall.

“We are doing a lot of work organising unity across the province and we are dealing with many issues,” said Ndobe.

He said they noted challenges facing the Harry Gwala region and the provincial working committee has decided that all regional executive members will not participate in convening branch general meetings.

“We took this decision because we believe it will assist in fairness to our members.
“Secondly, we believe there are some parallel structures and there will be provincial executive members who will go to branches that have grievances about the regional conference,” said Ndobe.

The upcoming regional conference will be co-ordinated by the provincial executive members.
He said their aim is to safeguard the integrity of ANC and asked branch and regional members to appreciate the intervention.

He also said they are trying to rebuild their organisation, and ask members to be calm and not personalise issues.

Harry Gwala regional chairperson Zamo Nxumalo said they decided to convene the cadre forum to prepare for the conference.
