THE much-anticipated ANC Harry Gwala regional elective conference has once again been rescheduled, this time for July after it was supposed to be hosted this week.

The decision to postpone the conference was taken at a provincial executive committee meeting which found that not all the branches were ready due to membership audits.

Recently the party lost three councillors who were murdered in Umzimkhulu - Harry Gwala ANC regional deputy secretary and Umzimkhulu Municipality Speaker, Khaya Thobela in April, ANC member and Umzimkhulu Municipality councillor Khayalethu Mgcwaba and Umzimkhulu Municipality councillor Mduduzi Tshibase last week.

It is suspected that squabbles between ANC members are the cause of the murders. Tension has resulted in some members hiring private security guards.

The postponement of the conference was confirmed by the party’s provincial deputy secretary, Mluleki Ndobe.

He said branch general meetings for regional conferences can only be convened after the organisational structures have received audit outcomes. “The branch general meetings that are currently under way are branch general meetings that are preparing for the provincial general council to be held from the June 23 to 25 in Musa Dladla Region and the national policy conference of the ANC to be held in Gauteng from June 30 to July 5,” said Ndobe.

The conference is expected to be closely contested between two faction groups as candidate names are already circulating on social media ahead of the party’s elective conference.

A list that has been circulating on social media naming faction groups that will take the region forward after the elective conference, include current regional chairperson Zamo Nxumalo, who is looking for another term and will go up against Amon Zondi. The Nxumalo group has chosen him as chairperson, Phumzile Nocanda for deputy chairperson, Sindi Msomi for secretary, Sindiso Magaqa for deputy secretary and Less Stuta for treasurer.

Zondi’s group has Ntobeko Mavuka for deputy chairperson, Nobuhle Nkabane for secretary, Bridget Bhengu for deputy secretary and Nkululeko Mphakathi for treasurer.

Ndobe said branches are requested to take time to read and discuss the draft policy discussion documents so that in the upcoming important meetings of the ANC they are ready to make substantive contributions.
