MORE than 100 homes in Epainette Mbheki area outside Mount Fletcher are facing relocation by Elundini Local Municipality to make way for construction of middle-income houses there.

People occupied the area more than 10 years ago, but the municipality is now claiming ownership of the land. Ward councillor, Mzoxolo Marubelela said people built their homes illegally in the area, which the municipality now wants to develop.

He said the municipality has begun telling people that they must leave the area, but they are resisting. “The town of Mount Fletcher is growing and the municipality is planning to build middle income houses,” said Marubelela.

Residents say they are not moving because they have buried their relatives and built houses in the area. One resident, Katleho Mabitle said they are ready to go to court or approach the Human Rights Commission to oppose the municipality’s decision. A meeting between residents and a chief, Montoeli Lehana that was supposed to discuss a way forward, did not take place.

The chief says the municipality must electrify the area and build middle income houses elsewhere. Mayor of Elundini Municipality referred all questions to Marubulele who has a better understanding of the situation.

Lehana said he is going to have meeting with the community to seek a way forward.

“I am going to take the views of people to the municipality.”
