EVERY journey begins with just a single step and most are filled with joy and the promise of a safe arrival.

There are, however, times when taking the first step requires sacrifice.

It is now more than 100 years since brave women in 1994 began their journey for the empowerment and liberation of women and since then a lot has changed.

South Africa today bears little resemblance to our ugly past largely because of the untold sacrifices of women throughout our history.

A glance at society will reveal that women occupy influential positions in government and play an important role in decision-making.

Since 1994 the living conditions of the majority of women have undergone significant changes.

Women have access to housing, water, electricity, education, social services, health care and other services.

As the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality we pride ourselves on the strides we have made when it comes to women empowerment. One can mention a few programmes or projects we have undertaken to empower women within our municipality.

We will be hosting a tourism awareness programme in Wards 4 and 10.

The venue for Ward 4 will be Zidweni hall on August 23 and for Ward 10 it will be the Bulwer Art Centre on August 24.

We invite the community to participate as we believe tourism is a major economic driver in our municipal area and encourage our people, especially previously disadvantaged groups, to come and explore opportunities in the tourism sector. Make use of every opportunity presented to you by your municipality.

Until next time, be blessed.
