THE new Greater Kokstad Municipality manager, Lulamile Mapholoba told reporters at a media briefing on Tuesday that the municipality needs an internal audit manager that will help fight corruption.

He said there is culture of employees doing as they please and not respecting public resources.

On Tuesday he began his duty as manager after filling the vacancy last month. He said many municipal employees do businesses with the municipality, which is not allowed.

“If a husband works for the municipality, his wife will do business with the municipality without declaring this to the municipality, then in the eyes of the public, the municipality is perceived as being corrupt,” said Mapholoba.

He said Kokstad needs to “smell fresh” for investors.

“There are municipalities that performed well in Harry Gwala and GKM needs to work with those municipalities to do better. I want to form a strong relationship with the chamber of commerce and tackle their challenges to attract investors.

“I don’t want people to leave Kokstad because of poor infrastructure or the lack of security. I want businesses to see Kokstad as an investment town by improving infrastructure. I want Kokstad to become a construction site and create employment,” said Mapholoba.

He said he won’t allow employees to be connected to politics during work hours.
