Newborn found mutilated

2015-11-11 06:01

ON Monday a newborn baby was found dead with missing body parts near the bridge leading to Mphela from Groom Street in Kokstad.

Amanda Matwele (22), who lives in Groom Street said she was coming from the clinic when she saw police vans and people surrounding something in the ground.

“I was curious to see what was happening so I went closer and got the shock of my life when I saw that it was a newborn baby, but its head had been cut from its body and it only had one arm,” she said.

She said people at the scene said the baby had been seen by pupils passing over the bridge going to Mphela.

“The children saw the body of a baby in plastic. They alerted elders in the area, who then contacted the police.

“I don't know what is happening in this world, people have become monsters, who could do something so cruel to an innocent soul?”

Kokstad police spokesperson Lieutenant Dumisani Ncongo confirmed that the baby had limbs missing and other body parts were found near the bridge below Groom Street.

“The body of a newborn baby was found in a plastic Spar bag. The body parts were scattered and its head was cut off. We could not even determine the gender of the baby as it had no private parts,” Ncongo said.

“At this point in time we are not sure what happened, but a case of concealment of birth has been opened and the case is under investigation.

“We urge anyone with information about the case to contact the Kokstad police station on 039 727 1123,” Ncongo said.
