No ambulance for sick woman

2017-09-29 06:00

A KOKSTAD resident, Ntombikayise Kornette, is upset as she claims she had to hire a metered taxi to take her sick mother to EG & Usher Memorial Hospital after an ambulance refused to take her.

Kornette said her mother, who can’t walk properly because of a stroke, complained of stomach pains at home in Shayamoya on September 11 and Kornette called for an ambulance to take her to hospital.

“I dialled 112 for the ambulance and the woman who answered said she cannot send an ambulance. I then phoned a metered taxi to take my mother to hospital,” said Kornette.

Her mother was taken to EG & Usher Memorial Hospital and was transferred to a hospital in Pietermaritzburg. Sindile Mabaso, assistance director of communication in the Department of Health in Harry Gwala District said it is unfortunate there is not sufficient information to investigate the complaint.
“We will be happy if the complainant can lodge a complaint with EG & Usher Hospital.

“Nevertheless, if this incident happened we extend our sincere apologies to the family,” said Mabaso.

He promised the Department of Health will investigate this matter thoroughly to avoid reoccurrence, but confirmed that the department has a shortage of ambulances, however, he said other resources are available.
