Senior church member arrested

FEVER REPORTER

A SENIOR member of a Maluti church was arrested for allegedly disobeying a court order and for malicious damage to property last Friday.
The name of the church is being withheld to protect its image.
It is alleged that the 52-year-old man, accompanied by church leaders wanted to put in a “reverend” to lead the Maluti branch, however certain church members were against the decision.

Unhappy church members applied to the court for an order to prevent the arrested man and his group from entering the church.

On 2 June, Maluti SAPS were called to the church when the unwanted church members erected a tent on church premises to inaugurate the church leader and conduct services.

Fever reporter spoke to a church congregant who is against the inauguration of new reverend and said members at the Maluti branch are not ready to receive a new reverend because they are happy with the existing one. “We have a reverend in Maluti and we don’t want a new one.
“On 27 May, the Maluti branch was told about the new reverend who was to replace the old one, but we refused to accept the decision.”

Police spokesperson Raphael Motloung said when police arrived at the church on 2 June they had to calm angry congregants and ordered the unwelcome group to remove their tent and leave the premises.
“Charges of failing to obey a court order and malicious damage to property were opened against a 52-year-old church member.
“The church member was then released on warning on the day of his arrest as police continue with further investigations,” adds Motloung.

He said police will monitor the situation in the church until order is restored.
