A NUMBER of people who played an exceptional role in the development of sport in Harry Gwala region were awarded at an event at Umzimkhulu College last Saturday.

KZN Sport Confederation chairperson, Thami Mchunu thanked Harry­ Gwala District Sport Confederation for hosting the awards and said the event will attract sport sponsors.

“When sponsors see positive results in sport they will put money in to develop sport. Harry Gwala district is the best district in KZN to develop sport and I am proud.

“Government must give more money to the Department of Education and Department of Sport and Recreation to support sport in order to help young people stay away from substance abuse and help people to get healthy.”

Greater Kokstad Municipality deputy­ mayor, Karen Walker said sport unites people and reduces obesity.

The Shayamoya High netball team was awarded a trophy and a netball kit for being the “school team of the year”.

Phezile Gamede was awarded “best coach” and Leonard Gregory earned the “best sports person with a disability” award.

Simphiwe Cele earned the “sport administrator of the year” award and Refilue Nketsa received the “sportsperson of the year” award.

A moment of silence was observed to honour the late Kokstad bodybuilder, Vusi “Bulldozer” Njisane. His trophy was given to Jean Nyembezi, chair of Harry Gwala Coaches’ Commission to give his family.
