MORE than 20 Checkout Kokstad employees picketed in front of the shop demanding better wages and payment of overtime on Monday.

The workers are represented by South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU). Shop steward Aviwe Gogela said management doesn’t want to comply with the basic employment conditions of workers.

“We have been trying to negotiate with management for a long time over salary increases and overtime pay.
“We want management to give each worker a R500 increase, but nothing has happened.

“We also want our hourly rate to be increased to R14 and R15 [depending on their position and salary]”

“When we complain about our rights to management they threaten to fire us. Striking is our last resort as a way of making sure our demands are met,” said an employee who wanted to remain anonymous.

There were fewer than 10 Checkout employees assisting customers during the protest.
Store manager, Mohammed Aberdeen said negotiations with union representatives are under way to ensure that operations get back to normal as soon as possible.

“I was not informed about workers’ demands, however, head office is negotiating with union representatives.”
