DISCUSSIONS are under way between the Greater Kokstad Municipality and the Griqua Traditional Council to rename the municipal building after the Griqua leader, Adam Kok III, and erect his statue to honour the East Griqualand community in Kokstad.

Kokstad was named after Adam Kok III. GKM mayor, Bheki Mtolo said Griqua people were the first inhabitants in Kokstad and deserve recognition.

“The municipality wants to recognise them by renaming the municipal building after Adam Kok III and erect his statue in front of the municipal building,” he said. Mtolo said the municipality is also going to rename streets in Kokstad. “All racial groups, business sectors and farmer associations are going to be consulted when renaming streets. Our aim is to make sure that everyone is recognised in Kokstad.”

Chairperson of the Griqua Traditional Council, Gabriel Marais welcomed the initiative. “Griqua people are happy about the GKM initiative so we want the municipality to make sure that Griqua people are employed and given opportunities. This is the start of new things after begging for recognition many times,” said Marais. He said when Adam Kok III arrived in Kokstad he created a laager at Mount Currie mountain and moved down to Kokstad town. Adam Kok’s grave is in Hope Street next to the police station.

The East Griqualand community recently celebrated their heritage at Riverview Stadium and the history of Griqua people was highlighed.
