Task team investigates political shootings

2017-07-28 06:00

A TASK team has been formed to investigate political attacks that have taken place in Umzimkhulu over the past few months. In the latest incident three councillors were attacked and shot by unknown suspects at Ibisi last Thursday.
Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Mxolisi Kaunda and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube visited Ibisi Police Station and the crime scene last Friday.

The latest victims are former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa, Ward 11 councillor Nontsikelelo Mafa, and Ward 16 councillor Jabu Mzizi. Kaunda said the three are in a critical, but stable condition in hospital.

It has been revealed they were attacked while returning from a meeting. Since April, Umzimkhulu Local Municipality has lost three councillors in separate shootings.

Kaunda said attacks of councillors in the area are raising fear for community leaders.
He called on the police to do thorough investigations.

“Government has deployed more police to keep the area safe. Political leaders and community members must also work with police to curb incidents of attacks,” said Kaunda.

Dube-Ncube said people must expose those who organise attacks.
“We condemn this barbaric act of violence with the contempt it deserves. We call upon anyone with information that can assist the law enforcement agencies as they conduct their investigation.”

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi asked people to assist police with information regarding the attack of councillors.
