Unity in congress movement

2017-09-15 06:00

THIS year, 2017, was declared The Year of OR Tambo in which we celebrate OR Tambo’s life and contribution to our freedom.
This is the year in which we are supposed to respect OR Tambo by pledging to strive together to achieve his vision of a free democratic and united society.

On Tuesday it was a sad day as we woke up to the news of the death of Sindiso Magaqa. What was more disheartening was when people were mudslinging which got to the point of using this sorrow for cheap political grandstanding and factionalism.
Insults and accusations were flying on social media while the family had not found solace from the shadow hovering over their heads. OR Tambo once said: “It is not physical proximity that unites one of many visions which unites all our people it is the vision of peace.”

Nelson Mandela once said: “I say that Oliver Tambo has not died because the ideals of freedom, human dignity and a colour-blind respect for every individual cannot perish.”

The political killings in KZN and specifically in Harry Gwala region are a direct contradiction of what OR Tambo stood for. I call upon all the members of the ANC to make the act of joining the ANC a more meaningful and valued process. Members of the ANC must feel on their shoulders the burden of responsibility like Tambo. People must understand they have been entrusted with the future of the movement and with the successful prosecution of the struggle of our people. Each one of us must be the glue that holds this organisation together.

Let us all put our differences aside and unite in order to achieve the objective of a better life for all. ANC is a beacon of hope. It is through ANC that we can overcome poverty, unemployment and inequality. Disunity, mistrust, ideological incoherence and factionalism are undermining our ability to address the challenges that confront our people. With unity we can attain economic freedom in our lifetime
