Churchesused for commercial purposes

2015-07-30 06:00

IT is rather distressing to find that historic church buildings have either been sold or leased, and are now used for commercial purposes.

Two beacons of the Christian faith - the Presbyterian Church in Langalibalele Street and the Methodist Church in Boshoff Street - are no longer places of worship.

These places are sacred, holy and revered by many in the community and are held very dear to people’s hearts.

They hold memories of many devoted preachers, major events in one’s life, Sunday school lessons and friends, baptisms, weddings, and so on.

There are many congregations in our city that are in dire need of premises from which to worship, but because of the lack thereof, have resorted to using their houses, garages, classrooms and municipal halls.

I appeal to administrators of church buildings to offer these to up-and-coming churches so that the work of God can continue, irrespective of the denomination of such church.

Perhaps advertising this in the newspaper would be a good idea.

I pray that no further church buildings will be commercialised.
