PIETERMARITZBURG swimming pools are now officially open. Following the recent upgrade of Berg Street swimming pool, Msunduzi Municipality said that all seven swimming pools will be open from today.

Pools that will be opened include the Alexandra pool, the Olympic pool in Newholmes, and the Sobantu, Woodlands and Eastwood pools. The heated Buchanan pool in the city centre remains open all year.

The Alexandra pool was closed last week as technicians worked on an inlet pipe. Repairs at the Berg Street swimming pool are complete, but the city is yet to announce when the official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place.

“The Berg Street swimming pool is fully operational and a full-time lifeguard has already been appointed. We are very happy at the results of the Berg Street pool considering the condition it was in a few years ago,” said community services portfolio chairperson, Inderjit Manilall.

Experienced lifeguard Phillip Radebe has already taken up his position at the Berg Street swimming pool. Radebe had been a lifeguard at Alexandra pool for four years.

“We are ready for the public to make use of the facilities. We are looking forward to the hot summer days now,” said Radebe.

Manilall said the lifeguards will also be offering swimming lessons once the pool is opened.

“We want to start a positive programme. We encourage nearby schools to also make use of the facilities provided,” said Manilall.

He warned those who use the swimming pool to take responsibility for the upkeep of the premises.

“It took us a long time to get the pool to this condition. The onus is upon those who use it to make sure the facilities are kept in this pristine condition. This is one of the best looking swimming pools in the city and we expect people to take care of it.”
