ENHANCING learning through play, the DG Murray Trust has funded five schools in the Howick area, through SchoolNet SA, to get training on incorporating the Xbox Kinect and Intel Tablets with their classroom activities.

Five schools - Nogqaza Primary, Qhamukile Primary, Tiriandra Primary, Cedara and Thembelihle Primary - received 20 Intel Tablets, a route, an X-box Kinect sensor and data projector.

SchoolNet project manager Hlengiwe Mfeka said: “As long ago as the forties, the Walt Disney company coined the term ‘edutainment’ to refer to the content that was entertaining but educational at the same time.

“The concept of learning through play is a well-known strategy that has been used by parents and teachers for centuries and has led to the growth of the educational toy industry. While there is a deliberate emphasis on the relationship between motor development and cognitive development, research has targeted four distinct literacies which include visual, oral communication in English as well as gross and fine motor co-ordination.

Mfeka said not only does the learning through play assist with learning, it also helps teachers with gamification models in their classrooms
