THE finalists for the eighth SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards have been finally nominated. These finalists will undergo further judging and public voting, subsequently the winners to be announced on the awards night.

The Crowns’ founder, Zanele Mbokazi, says: “The quality and diversity of the products is amazing. This year we have confirmed that gospel music is extremely rich and there are a number of talented and professional artists who are still not well known. I am in awe with the craft that we have received. I salute those who entered, they all remain winners,” said Mbokazi.

“There is a fresh creative wave of gospel artists that the Almighty God is raising for this generation. They carry a relevant compelling Christian content with their artistry. We are truly blessed to partake in their blessing,” said Crown awards spokesperson, Sipho Kaleni.

Publicist and media specialist Wendy Sithole said: “In line with this year’s theme, The Higher Level, The New Beginnings, the number and the quality of material submitted for entries was a huge improvement from the previous year. Year 2015 saw the increase in entries, with a total of 701. The World Gospel Powerhouse is delighted with this development and showcase of talent in the gospel music industry in South Africa, and beyond our borders,” said Sithole.

The category for Best Gospel Newcomer had most entries at 74. Right after the announcement of nominees the public will get to vote on six of 33 categories.

Six categories that will be voted for by the public are Best Gospel Artist, Best Gospel Song, Best AmaZioni, Best Gospel Maskandi’ Best Gospel TV Show and Best Gospel Community Radio Show.

The main event will be on 15 November at Durban’s ICC. The red-carpet event starts at 4.30pm and the main programme will start at 6pm. The awards will be broadcast live on SABC1 from 8pm.

To vote the public is urged to SMS the category, name of the artist and/or show to 34069 (SMS cost R1.50). This will be done once the nominees are revealed to the public.
