Passionate about community development and changing people’s lives, Sphiwe Sibiya is the face behind the popular Sukuma Sakhe programme on KZN 104 FM. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to her.

BORN to Ntombi and Elliot Sibiya in KwaMachibisa 25 years ago, Sibiya started her education at Esigodini Primary School and completed her matric at Edendale Technical High. Although her parents wanted her to become an electrical engineer, after studying for a year at Vaal University of Technology, she dropped out and follow her first love, radio.

Her show airs Monday to Friday, from 9am to 12pm and touches on community development, health and lifestyle issues, motivation, non-governmental organisations and issues that effect communities.

After working at the station for a year, she also sees herself working for bigger radio stations such as Metro FM, owning her radio station and being behind the programming and production of certain radio and television programmes.

When asked what sets her show apart from others, she said: “We are all about motivation. We encourage people to wake up motivated and to excel in whatever talent they were given by God. We are also the first radio station to work with different NGOs who are given slots to educate communities about different programmes.”

Sibiya said while she enjoys being behind the mic, her greatest wish is to be involved in community development programmes.

“I haven’t done that much and this is just the beginning for me. I want to reach a point where I will not have to introduce myself, but where my work will define who I am. I want to leave a mark on the industry and get the greatest fulfilment from helping others.

“We all have to start somewhere and young people should not be disheartened by things that don’t work out the first time. Keep on knocking until doors are opened. Be passionate about your dream and network with different people.”
