CARTER High School grounds were abuzz this weekend when the fifth annual Honchos Pietermaritzburg High Schools FA Cup was played.

Pupils from 28 high schools filled the grounds for two pulsating days of football, followed by plenty of excitement in both the girls and the boys section.

In the girls section, Haythorne Secondary completed an amazing hat-trick of FA Cup final wins by beating Carter 3-0 in the final. Overall, it was pleasing to see the growth in depth in girls soccer and what was a pleasing touch was that the girls finals was played on the main field and also with all female officials.

Carter’s Jadine Pitout was the top goalscorer of the tournament with a record nine goals. Anele Ndlovu and Tracey de Vos, both from Haythorne, were named winners of the Player of the Tournament and the Goal of the Tournament awards respectively.

In the boys section, hosts Carter were determined to defend the trophy they won last year but they were defeated in the final by tournament newcomers ML Sultan Secondary who were the surprise team in the tournament, winning the final 1-0. Vusi Mkhize (ML Sultan) was the tournament Top Goalscorer with seven goals, equalling Maritzburg United player Ryan Moon’s record. Storm Ramnand of ML Sultan was adjudged as Player of the Tournament and Goal of the Tournament went to Carter’s Simphiwe Shezi, who scored a spectacular aerial bicycle kick in their Quarter Final final versus Wartburg.
