Health delivery in this country, like SAA, Eskom and local government is bust

2015-04-30 16:45

NOT so long ago, the challenges at Northdale Hospital were exposed in the media.

Many of Northdale’s problems with staff emanate from a shortage of human resources, low morale and challenging working conditions.

The MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, scurried to charge that if Northdale was his bank, he would move to another bank - presumably for acceptable service delivery. Currently, the KZN province needs a minimum of 800 well-staffed and equipped ambulances but it now has just fewer than 600 vehicles and about less than 50% of that number is in good working order.

The provincial Department of Health was only able to allocate R1 million towards ambulances due to its crippling financial situation.

Dhlomo is in deep denial - health, like Eskom, SAA and local government, is bust. Among hospitals, Grey’s, Addington and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital are all forced to turn away cancer patients as oncology treatment is impossible, equipment is in a state of disrepair or collecting dust.
