Imbali woman at ECR helm

AFTER serving as East Coast Radio station manager for less than a month, Pietermaritzburg-born Boni Mchunu has made history by being the first black person to head the station. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to her.

Born in Imbali Unit 1, Mchunu started her humble beginnings at Funulwazi Primary School before going to Zibukezulu Technical High School. She then completed a diploma in business management, a Bachelor’s degree in marketing and a diploma in project management.

While this is her first experience in the media industry, Mchunu comes with vast experience in marketing having worked for leading marketing companies such as Absa, Unilever, where she worked for seven years, and Tourism KwaZulu-Natal where she travelled around the world selling South Africa to various countries.

Being only two weeks in her position, Mchunu says she is enjoying her new role which involves programming and brand equity, something that is very close to her heart.

“All in all our main aim is to provide quality to our listeners, to inform the community and to ensure we relate to what they want. While the business is in good shape, my vision is to take it to even greater heights. I want to see it equitable in terms of listenership and to ensure that it adds value to our target audience.”

Married to Mvelo, and mother to Andiswa, Ziyanda and Khanya, Mchunu believes that South Africa is alive with possibilities.

Speaking about women in leadership positions she said: “The sky is the limit, there is nothing that one cannot do under the sun. I believe that as women we need to support and uplift each other. Many of us have assumed positions that were previously male-dominated, but it is up to us to support one another and prove ourselves.”

A self-proclaimed optimist, she is inspired by positive people and positive things and hates negativity.

“I respect life and believe in taking full responsibility for my actions. I believe in striving for better, so that when I look back I will not have any regrets. I want to leave positive footprints on this Earth.”

Advising young women, she said: “In this life, you are the captain of your own ship. Steer it the way you want it. Create your own life script or movie before someone else does it in a way that you will not be proud of. Take charge of your life, and know where you come from, where you are and where you are headed.”
