IN the aftermath of the slaying of a Pietermaritzburg primary-school principal, a school official has said it was “obvious” she had an enemy.

Nokuthula Magwanyana’s body was found on the Table Mountain Road with multiple wounds apparently inflicted by a panga.

The Villa Maria Primary School principal had just left school for the day and was heading home when she was killed.

Villa Maria School governing body chairperson Mlungisi Gcabashe recalled the morning that he and Magwanyana saw a threatening message aimed at the principal on the school’s walls.

The words “Nokuthula Resign” were written in red on the school building.

However, Magwanyana had not said her life was in any danger, Gcabashe said.

He said it appeared that a ritual had been performed outside her office as red candles and a tray with burnt traditional incense and muthi were left behind.

“When we arrived at school two weeks ago, we saw the writing on two walls of the staff room building and one on another classroom building.

“The culprits did this on Sunday at midnight because they wanted us to see it on Monday. We asked the security guard if he had seen anything, and he confessed that he had fallen asleep.”

Gcabashe said the writing on the school walls was not the first message Magwanyana (46) had received from her enemies.

“Something” was burnt on her car boot last month. It is obvious that she had an enemy - we just don’t know who the enemy is.”

Gcabashe said there had been several disputes over Magwanyana’s appointment as principal, to the point that the matter was escalated to the provincial Department of Education.

“There were a lot of people who wanted to be the principal of this school.” - News24
