SOUTH African soccer followers are in for a bumper weekend when the “Competition of Sunrises” - the Nedbank Cup semi-finals take place.

This weekend Ajax Cape Town, SuperSport United, Vasco Da Gama and Mamelodi Sundowns will be vying for a place in the final of the Ke Yona final scheduled for 17 May.

The first semi-finals will be a date between Ajax Cape Town and SuperSport United on Saturday at Cape Town’s Athlone Stadium at 8:15pm.

Urban Warriors head coach Roger De Sa says their assignment against the Pretoria outfit will be interesting and tough.

De Sa says the boys from Tshwane are about to taste what it is like to play against a Cape side in Cape Town.

“SuperSport United will be interesting visitors. We respect them and we are just lucky this game will be hosted by us.

“We will try our best to represent our followers in our back yard in a good way. We are also lucky because we are familiar with weather conditions in Cape Town and our visitors are also likely to find it interesting,” said De Sa.

One of United’s long-serving members and star defender Thabo September this week told Echo that his side will be careful as visitors and expect endless fireworks.

“We are expecting a tough one, especially as visitors. We are also expecting them to come at us from all directions and make conditions tough for us. I personally expect endless fireworks,” said September.

The other semi-finals, the second one, is scheduled for Sunday when Vasco Da Gama from the national first division and Cape Town will lock horns with Mamelodi Sundowns at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

Da Gama’s leading goal scorer Mbulelo Wambi say their approach will be cautious because their opponents are a big team who also wish to be in the final.

“We respect them as PSL giants, but we know that if we win this, we will already be in the final,” said Wambi.

Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane believes the only way to overcome the visitors will be to go for the kill from the first whistle because “there are no small teams in the cup games”
