A NEW lease on life has been given to the Kwa-Chief community in Mpophomeni, after Midmar Crushers built a crèche for them as part of their corporate social investment project.

The crèche - Siyazama Educare and Play Centre - was officially opened last week, founded by Pecona Mbambo in 2006, but had been operating out of one classroom with more than 90 children attending.

Mbambo said they approached Midmar Crushers for donations and were pleased to receive two new classrooms with six toilets, and two water tanks.

“When I established the crèche, my intention was to educate and take care of local children, including vulnerable children and orphans. However, because I did not have the means, more than 90 children had to be accommodated in one class. Our enrolment started to drop because of the shortage of space.

“Things will change for the better for the community, as they no longer will have to take their children to crèches that are far away from the area.

“We are happy and this is the first of its kind in the area.”

Midmar Crushers communications manager Zamo Zwane said as a mining company, they have to do a social responsibility project in line with the Minerals Act.

“We had called local projects to make applications and from there, we had to prioritise the important ones. Our mission is to uplift the standard of education, hence we created relationships with the crèche, local primary schools and high schools.

“We also have a bursary fund for high schools where we sponsor pupils who excel in mathematics and physical science.”

The crèche, worth R400 000, boasts two new classrooms, toys, sand pits and a jungle gym
