Msunduzi invests in promoting city

2015-08-27 06:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality is placing great emphasis on events in the city keeping in line with Mayor Chris Ndlela’s promise at the State of the City Address to make Pietermaritzburg the City of Choice.

At a recent executive committee meeting, members approved various sponsorships at events in the city during the next few months saying the money will be used purely for marketing and public relations needs to promote Pietermaritzburg.

Exco agreed that R160 000 will be sponsored for the upcoming Pietermaritzburg Msunduzi Hospitality Expo from 20 to 22 November at the Royal Showgrounds. Another R150 000 has been allocated to the garden show from 24 to 27 September.

Keeping in line with building the status of the city as “Bike City”, R275 000 has been allocated for the Cycling South Africa-UCI events.

Exco further approved that the municipality enter into a three-year partnership agreement with Cycling SA in the hopes that marketing around this event will put Msunduzi on the map in terms of a tourist destination.

Exco member, councillor Bill Lambert, expressed his support for the investments made by the municipality.

“It’s good to see the municipality entering into partnerships like this, showing the willingness to extend its hospitality to others,” he said.

Ndela highlighted how important building relationships with city investors to attract people to Pietermaritzburg is.

“If Pietermaritzburg is to compete with major cities then we are going to have to do more, not only in attracting major investments, but also making sure we do not lose these investments to other cities.”
