FOLLOWING the KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo’s statement in a recent budget presentation that there are challenges experienced within the emergency medical services sector and a lack of ambulances, 63 new Mercedes-Benz Vito ambulances were distributed to all districts.

UMgungundlovu received six.

This new fleet is introduced to top up, and in most cases, replace the current number of ambulances the province has.

“Emergency medical services is one of the three core pillars in health service delivery alongside primary health care and hospital services,” said Dhlomo.

The province is home to more than 10 million people and at least 80% of these depend on public health sector for medical and health needs.

“Our emergency medical service is the largest emergency medical service in the country, operating more than 300 ambulances and has more than 2 500 dedicated paramedics in its employ.

“We have a responsibility to communities and visitors to always offer a high level of pre-hospital care by skilled staff.”
