“SOME women get into the entertainment industry for the wrong reasons and that kills the passion to excel,” said DJ Zothea.

Her true name is Zothea Heather and she can be counted in the same female deejay circles as DJ Cindo, Zinhle and others.

Her passion for music began in high school in the nineties. Heather’s journey started when she was invited by a friend at a party.

“My friend was the deejay at the party and from that moment I developed an interest,” she said.

Heather was born in Johannesburg and studied there. Now however, she will be a regular Pietermaritzburg deejay because of projects with Fanotainment.

Apart from being a deejay, she is also a producer, singer, song writer and composer. In June she released a single Sori Vuku (Speechless).

Heather said more women are needed in the music industry.

“What we need are women who are versatile. The focus should not be only about music or spinning the plates. It should incorporate other skills - producing, song writing or composing must be part and parcel. What kills the passion and stops dreams from being fulfilled is focusing on one thing. That is not enough, versatility should be there all the time.”

Her recent performance was at the PMB Jazz Festival at the Golden Horse Casino Hotel on Saturday.

“It was a great experience and I enjoyed every moment. I have been involved in a lot of projects which have taught me a lot,” she added.

In 2012 she registered her company, Zothea Productions.

“The reason for doing that is I want to leave a legacy. That is what women should be striving for when they are in the industry. They must focus on building a legacy and never be forgotten. Understand why you are there and the purpose of being there. Happy Women’s Month

How much food do you need to concentrate?

We have been taught that we need three meals a day in order to make it through the day and while most of us indulge in more than our fair share there is a large portion of South Africans who are living off barely enough to sustain them.
