PERFORMING his first music gig at the then Madlula’s Place in 2009 was a life changer for Ndumiso Gabela of Soulful Sound Band and Soulful Music Production.

Since then his band has become a household name in the city. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

spoke to him about their success.

Although originally from Ulundi, Gabela moved to Pietermaritzburg in 2008.

Gabela, who played keyboard, started the Soulful Sound Band with bass artist Sbo Mkhize and the late drummer Bhekabona Qwabe.

“After the loss of our drummer in 2010, I sort of lost courage. In 2011 I partnered with my best friend Sthe Xulu and we revived the band.

“We hosted a gospel show that attracted a lot of undiscovered talent from the city. Since then the band has performed for artists under the Themba Njilo Foundation [umbrella] and has played at a United Nations conference.”

The company recently produced two gospel artists - Thuli M and Nomonde.

“Our mission is to unearth young talent. We want to train and mentor talent of all genres. We hope to host a show that will focus on honouring local artists and musicians who have not been given recognition when big events are held in the city.

“We want to expose these hidden talents and work in accord as musicians and artists.”
