Project management unit in shambles

2015-10-01 06:00

THE Msunduzi Municipality currently has an array of engineering projects on the go, so it came as a surprise during a sitting of a recent infrastructure services portfolio committee meeting, that the municipality’s project management unit has no engineers.

The deputy municipal manager for infrastructure services Sabatha Nomnganga said: “We need to be fair to the manager of the project management unit. For a city of this magnitude it has to be noted that there is not a single engineer in the project management unit. It is a crisis for the entire infrastructure [business unit].

“It’s been a problem since I joined this municipality to employ people. I don’t know, moving forward, what the solution will be. A city of this magnitude should have a minimum of 10 engineers who look after projects but we do not have a single one.”

He was hopeful that soon there will be vacant jobs advertised as a means to recruit engineers in the unit.

Msunduzi councillor Thulani Xulu said the project management unit is the reason why a lot of projects have been put on hold.

“A lot of projects are on hold and some are delayed simply because they cannot do their project management properly. Our project management unit is in shambles,” said Xulu
