SHOOTING THE BREEZE

2015-08-27 06:00

LET me officially announce once again that my annual Ward 34 Community Sports Day is confirmed for 3 October at the Panorama School grounds at 8am.

I am not only excited, I am over the moon the way things have come together for this year’s event. It is going to be a more colourful, bigger and eye-catching event where new history will be made.

Besides other wards from around the city being part of it, our foreign brothers living around Ward 34 will be also part of the day to promote unity, brotherhood and fight against xenophobia.

More focus will be on the poor communities living around Ward 34 such at Malivana, Esitimeleni and Jesmondene squatter camp.

Recently Ward 34 leadership visited these areas and I still can’t believe the poor conditions under which people have to live there.

My heart bled when I saw a group of children just sitting around not even attending school, and without anybody to look after them, for the whole day.

My heart says those communities need us and we honestly pray that our Msunduzi Municipality hears our plea.

I believe, besides the sporting event, that we will be able to bring them together for a day and keep them out of possible harm as something must be done to improve their living conditions.

I also believe a sporting event will bring everybody living around Ward 34 together irrespective of race, colour, creed or religion.

I will be also looking and “begging” for second-hand toys, clothes, shoes, blankets, sports equipment and groceries to be donated to these communities.

“I am glad that last year we were able to collect clothes which were donated to Jika Joe informal settlement residents.
