JOMO Sono has come out in support of Masibusane Zongo after his “showboating” was criticised by Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane.

Zongo wowed the crowd with his tricks and skills during Platinum Stars’ goalless draw against the Brazilians, and was named Man of the Match for his efforts.

Mosimane questioned the award afterwards, and urged Zongo to use his tricks to get into the box and threaten instead.

But Sono, whose Jomo Cosmos side drew their League opener against Maritzburg United on Monday, says Zongo should be free to express himself.

“I heard Pitso saying in Europe and what-what, but this is not Europe, it is South Africa,” Sono says.

“If the boy wants to shibobo somebody he must shibobo.

“I stood on top of the ball when I was playing and I still stood on the ball when I was in New York and they loved it.

“So if the boy has a way of expressing himself, let him express himself, but if he loses it and they score then kill him, but let them express themselves because this is Africa.”

Zongo previously trained under Sono, who still believes in the play-maker’s talent and has backed him to succeed – providing he stays clean off the field.

“I think the kid, if he takes away all this nonsense, is one helluva player. He can be the best player in the country if he fixes his head.

“I wanted him and he trained with me for a week, but then the trouble started and he vanished, so I couldn’t follow him, but I’m glad that Cavin Johnson got him right because I think he’s exceptional.”
