TALKING FOOTBALL

2015-06-11 06:00

IT IS disappointing that we are linked to the Fifa bribery scandals. It is also difficult to understand that a country with huge social and economic challenges is donating football development money to other countries.

Currently, many gifted young footballers lack good coaching, proper facilities and equipment. What happened to the slogan “ charity begins at home”. Ordinary men and women in this country spend their meagre resources helping the youth of this country. Why would people in leadership positions be insensitive to the suffering of their own people?

Generally, many of us love to impress strangers at the expense of our families. It has become sort of a culture for many men to dine and provide expensive drinks to friends while their children starve at home.

We were asked to forward applications to the legacy fund and many of us did not even receive responses. “Cry the beloved country” said Alan Paton. It looks like the man was predicting what is happening today. Public institutions have become private properties. It is about me first and the rest of the others later. Many young boys and girls are crying out for opportunities of education and sports training.

South Africans need to learn from these embarrassing situations. We need to move on and realise the enormity of our social and economic challenges. Education and skills development is the single most important gift that can be given to poor black boys and girls. This business of hosting events and impressing the world is not solving the problems of our young people. It is not too late to change and put others first instead of ourselves. Football and this country will be here long after we are dead. We have a responsibility to leave a better future for young South Africans.

Whether you are a parent, football official or government official, let us do the right thing. Unzima lo mthwalo
