Tireless pool crusaders

2015-09-17 06:00

THE Olympic and Berg Street swimming pools have undergone major renovations, to the delight of the communities they serve.

The relocation of the entrance to the Olympic pool to the fenced car park, with visible security, makes Newholme Way safer.

This has been a concern of residents for decades.

The Berg Street pool makeover comes at the beginning of spring. For years, schools and the community suffered as the pool was left to fall apart.

Two individuals stand out as these renovations are cherished.

Appreciation must go to Unwar Rawat and Jay Jugwanth - both of whom engaged tirelessly with the municipality to address the unacceptably dangerous parking outside the Olympic pool and the collapse of the Berg Street pool.

For years they kept the candle of hope burning and met resistance from the municipality with greater determination.

The history of the Berg Street pool cannot exclude these two stalwarts and The Witness, for in the midst of community indifference, they regularly drew attention to the plight of swimming facilities in your esteemed newspaper.

Now that the pool is restored to pristine condition, glory seekers are queueing for the accolades.

The communities of Eastwood, Woodlands and Sobantu must take a page out of the Rawat and Jugwanth’s book and fight for their pools too.

Sit back, and you have only yourselves to blame.
