Volunteers needed for English lessons

2015-05-07 06:00

ONE of Mama Ntombi’s Community Projects (MNCP) volunteers, Katherine Jackson, a qualified teacher, visits Umsilinga Primary twice a week to give the pupils extra English lessons so they can grasp the basics of the language.

Umsilinga Primary services children from the impoverished community at Ezinketheni. Many of the children are orphaned or neglected and live with aged grandmothers, who are mostly illiterate. The children in this community don’t have access to TV, newspapers or magazines because the area lacks even the basic infrastructure of proper roads, electricity, water and sanitation.

From Grade 1 to 3 the pupils are taught in Zulu, but from Grade 4 the medium of instruction and teaching changes to English, and the children are struggling.

More volunteers are needed, but they must have their own transport to get to and from the school. Donations of old magazines would also be appreciated.

For further inquiries, contact Sandra Pillay of MNCP on 033 342 6535 or email mncp@telkomsa.net

Umsilinga Primary School teachers and the staff appreciate the help MNCP is giving pupils.
