THE annual Jerry Barnes Ward 34 Community Sports Day this year is set for 3 October, Saturday at Panorama sports ground. As event founder and organiser Jerry Barnes says the event is going to be big and colourful as it celebrates its fifth anniversary.

“Every year this event brings together communities from different walks of life. I am proud to confirm that over the years it has become a real crowd puller and a genuine community event,” said Barnes.

This year’s event is not only going to give sporting teams such as netball, soccer and fun runners or walkers a chance to compete, it will offer community members an unusual stage to show their talent and trading skills.

Local entrepreneurs, tuck-shop owners or street vendors will get a platform to put up their stalls at a low fee. Local gospel, traditional groups, amateur artists, kwaito, hip-hop groups, deejays, brass bands, ingoma and others will be afforded a chance to showcase their talent.

“I believe Ward 34 and other nearby wards are very big and are blessed with different cultures, skills and talent. So this time I decided to give everybody a chance to be part of the event,” said Barnes.

At this year’s event attention will be on the needy and poor communities staying around Jesmondeen, Esitimeleni and Malivana quarter camp.

“We will be collecting old clothes, groceries, blankets, shoes, toys or anything, just to give to them. What is shocking is that there are more than 20 businesses around these areas, but they turn a blind eye.”
