Ward 34 Sports Day on Saturday

2015-10-01 06:00

THE annual Ward 34 Sports Day will be held to honour residents in the area. Veteran journalist and founder of the event, Jerry Barnes this week said the event is dedicated to the residents of his area, especially the youth.

“I don’t have cash or a budget to put this event together every year, but I try my best to see it happening. I am passionate about sport, my profession and my community and they gave me a chance and always encouraged me in my career in my early days.

“This is my small way of thanking and honouring them. From the bottom of my heart, I am very grateful to my community and the leaders of Ward 34.

“The event is open to everybody, old and young, who want to take part in community sport.”

Poobie Naidoo Sports, the Department of Sports and Recreation, Karanichas, Panorama School and Gift of the Givers are on board to support the occasion.

The main focus will be on needy communities around Ward 34 area such in Malivana (behind Eastwood Garage), Mkhukhwini (Jesmondeen) and Esitimeleni (Upper Panorama).

“My heart bleeds when I think about those people, especially the children. They don’t have anything - no clothes, no school uniforms, no shoes, no food and no blankets. I appeal to our people and companies to donate something towards these people.

“During the event, we will have a collection point where we will accept blankets, groceries, old clothes and any type of help or donation.”

The event is scheduled for Saturday 3 October at Panorama School grounds from 9am.

Items can be dropped off at 8 Redwood Crescent, Panorama Garden, Panorama, PMB.
