Association to revive netball in the city

2015-11-26 06:00

TO revive netball in the city, the Midlands Netball Association coaches pupils and out-of-school youth at Indumiso campus, every Sunday.

The association was established in the seventies, but was recently revived in September.

Netball coach Joe Majola said: “We want to revive netball because we believe it is no longer given the recognition it deserves as a sport. We don’t have girls playing at provincial level. Netball teaches discipline and we believe that if girls are introduced to the sport at a young age, we can fight social ills.

“We want to keep them busy on weekends and we believe that children who are physically active are also mentally stimulated.” Coaching focuses on girls between the ages of nine and 15.

Majola said they are concerned about the standard of netball in schools because there isn’t as much focus on the sport.

“Our aim is to train these young girls so they can compete at a club level. There are different sports codes that can be played by female pupils, but the focus seems to be deviating to female soccer rather than embracing other sports,” said Majola.

People who are interested must visit Indumiso campus every Sunday from 2pm to 4pm.
