A LETTER circulated on social media saying matriculants will have to rewrite a maths exam is a fake, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has said.

The fake letter looked like it was written on an official department letterhead, and was supposedly issued on behalf of “H.M. Mweli Director-General DBE”.

“That [letter] is fraud,” spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga told News24 on Thursday.

He said the department had made no such announcement. Hubert Mathanzima Mweli is however, the director-general of the department.

The fake letter stated: “Due to reports of the premature circulation of the Core Mathematics Paper 2 all National Senior Certificate Candidates having written the paper on the 2nd of November this year are to rewrite the subject on Monday, 30 November 2015 from 09:00 to 12:00.”

Some Twitter users laughed at the “prank”, while others were still looking for clarity on whether it was real.

User @SipzLeThingz said: “Matric maths rewrite real or?”, while Mo Amod said: “Lol at whoever made the fake maths paper 2 rewrite letter! Any matric’s worst nightmare.” Another user, Sinenhlanhla, said: “Just for that prank, all the Maths marks for Matric must be increased by 10% to relieve us from this emotional distress.”
