FORMER Orlando Pirates feared striker Jerry “Legs of Thunder” S’khosana says the country should be proud of the Parktown-based outfit.

S’khosana this week told Echo that the majority of South African teams do not go far in Caf competitions and for Bucs to be in the finals means a lot for local soccer.

“Unfortunately, there’s the wrong mentality around Mzansi teams regarding Caf competitions. Most of them feel that such fixtures are a waste of time and money.

“They also feel that to take part outside our borders always cost their teams dearly, so they are more interested in domestic [PSL] competitions,” said S’Khosana.

The Alexander-born goal-poacher asks Mzansi soccer followers to urge Pirates to do well because it will speak volumes about SA soccer.

“This is not the time to say I’m a Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United, Maritzburg Unietd or AmaZulu supporter, but let’s all understand that Pirates will be representing South Africa.

If Pirates win, the whole country will celebrate and we will make history,” said S’khosana.

Pirates will play against the Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel on Saturday at Orlando Stadium (8pm) in the first leg final of the Confederation Cup final. The second leg final is scheduled to take place in Tunisia on 29 November.

The current Ajax Cape Town and former Pirates head coach, Roger De Sa, said the Soweto giants can go all the way and win the trophy.

“This is African soccer and anything is possible. Things may look tough for Pirates, but they went through a lot and deserve to be there. I strongly feel that they can pull it off.
